Ok here's the "tutorial" for 7140 to 7170 total conversion in English language.
7140 is the direct 7170 Alien Box without one FON connection and S0 bus. Since 7170 firmware is somewhat better patched of bugfixes it makes nice solution for people annoyed with bugs still present in latest 7140 firmware.
Ok, before you start you will need an FTP application, WinRAR and kernel.image from 7170 58.04.80 firmware.
Free GNU FTP application can be found here. Extract it on main partition - example C:\.
Since I don't like commercial software I would recommend - free archive manager IzArc.
To extract kernel.image you just need to open firmware file with IzArc. Place kernel.image on root of yours main partition - example C:\.
[[Both FTP software and kernel.image must be in root or at least in same directory]]
Ok lets get started:
Important note: To gain access to Fritz!BOX via FTP you will need to execute FTP login command within 5 seconds of router power on!
There's one more trick here which I prefer more. You can force FTP access simply by starting recovery exe of different, incompatible, Fritz!BOX. When recovery program reports that you have invalid hardware just click CANCEL and FTP access will now be available all the time until next restart of the router.
Note 2: Yours 7140 must run an unmodified AVM firmware so prior the start do recovery with proper exe image.
Note 3: In order to enhance the chances of successful recovery you must disable media sensing in Windows. Procedure for XP can be found here and for Win7 users here.
1. Run ftp.exe <-- Which you have extracted from archive.
2. open 192.168.178.1 [login adam2 pass adam2]
5. quote PASV
6. quote MEDIA FLSH
7. put kernel.image mtd1
[optional] If you want to use German 7170 firmware on yours 7140 box or vice verse use one of following commands.
8. quote SETENV firmware_version avm <-- if you attend to use German firmware or
8'. quote SETENV firmware_version avme <-- if you attend to use English firmware
9. quote SETENV firmware_info 58.04.80
11. Start recovery exe of corresponding 7170 Fritz!Box.
